Dr. David Denekas joined Dunkirk Family Practice in 2007 as a part time family physician while he worked at the Emergency Department at Calvert Memorial Hospital (now CalvertHealth Medical Center), which he had joined when moving to southern Maryland in 1984. He started his career in US Public Health Service in a small community in North Carolina where he was the only doctor. “I was trained in internal medicine (the care of adults), but as the only doctor in town, I had to treat all patients, including children, even the family dog if the vet was out of town! I learned pediatrics pretty quickly and now really love it.”

Dr. Denekas enjoys the variety of conditions he faced both in emergency medicine and family practice. He left emergency medicine in 2009 to focus on primary care, where he still gets to help patients with a wide spectrum of health issues. “The difference is that now, my job is to keep my patients out of the emergency room.”

Dr. Denekas adheres to Dunkirk Family Practice’s mission of providing proactive care to patients. Many of his patients come to him with positive goals, like being healthy enough in retirement that they can go hiking or being able to dance at their granddaughter’s wedding. “There’s an odd sense of gratification when doing a good job means nothing happens…when together we can devise a care plan that keeps my patient healthy, out of the ED and able to hike as much as they want at any age.”
